Like you, I have been seeing the news of more and more public figures, Hollywood elites, politicians, and journalists being accused of sexual assault or harassment. It seems that we are experiencing some sort of public cultural awakening. There was the hashtag on social media, #metoo that women (and some men) shared at having experienced sexual assault. The “Time Person of the Year” was just named as the women they are calling, “Silence Breakers.” More and more victims are coming forward and joining their voices with others.
I’m not sure you need one more public commentary on the reality of sexual assault and discrimination. But, you may need an apology – an apology from the Church. I’m not speaking specifically about First Christian Church, but from the Church universal, the institution of the entire Church. The Church has historically handled the reality of sexual assault in our world and even within our Church walls, terribly. As a minister, a representative of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, this saddens me. I lament that the institutional Church has historically chosen self-preservation over accountability. The institution of the Church has sometimes been quick to “speak for” rather than to listen. The Church has all too often pushed victims to silence. Or used God’s Word to hurt, rather than to heal. I lament that for some, the Church has not been a safe place.
Here’s what I want you to know: That your minister and the entire staff take seriously our role in the safety and well-being of all of God’s children (in our building or otherwise.) We also have policies in place here at First Christian for those who work with children that are designed for their protection. Finally, I want you to know that no matter what burdens you carry, I strive to have compassion, a listening heart, and a willingness to walk with you on the journey. The great thing about Church is that you do not have to walk this road alone.
P.S. This Sunday we are lighting the Candle of Peace – Don’t we need it? See you Sunday!
Glad to be in ministry with you!
